Some people connect containers together so overflow moves from one to the next. You can begin with one drum near a downspout and build from there.

Routine maintenance includes cleaning gutters and screens, flushing tanks, and inspecting for debris. In cold climates, completely empty tanks before freezing weather and drain pipelines. These small seasonal tasks become part of the rhythm of caring for a garden.
Any amount of rainwater harvesting is meaningful. You can start with a single 55 gallon drum or a few buckets under a roof drip line. Over time, storage can increase. The routine of collecting and using rainwater keeps you moving. It keeps you attentive to weather and season. It can support a garden in a small yard, a shared community space, or a row of pots near the door.
